“Almost there.” He said, desperately using the last remnants of will left in his body. Gasping, hoarsely, “Almost.”
The sounds of the war only a quiet dim behind them. They had left it behind. It was over now.
She looked up into his exhausted face. War and blood darkened his features, but she saw more clearly now then ever before. He loved her, and he would never not love her. Not for anything.
She felt his body, heaving at every step. But he wouldn't relent. Her wounds, deep, but his wounds, she knew, she saw, were more.
“Put me down.” She whispered softly.
He didn't hear her. His focus, his will was to take the next step. Then the next. That's all that he could do now. The searing pain along his side and shoulder would cripple him if he stopped. He couldn't stop. Not now.
“My love.” She raised her arm to his face.
“We are almost there.” He said as he stumbled forward.
“My love.” She said again, this time her voice softened any noise he had in his mind and he looked down.
Tears welled up in his eyes, and they fell down his cheeks freely. “I am so sorry! I tried so hard. I am sorry that I couldn't...” He fell with her in his arms to the hard frozen ground. The frosted plains harder than stone bit into both of them like daggers but neither felt the pain.
“I know. It is okay.” She whispered as she held him to her breast.
His sobbing came easily. There was nothing left to say. They had fought long and hard. The war was viscous and brutal but through it all, they never left each others side. Both had lost so many through the war. Their love was all they had. That bond was greater than any forged blade man or machine could create and harder to break.
But their mortal union was breaking. Not by choice but by nature. His life was draining slowly, but it was draining and nothing could be done to stop it and they both knew it. She held his head in her hands and kissed him pulling his face to hers so she could see his eyes.
Momentarily lost in that split second of an eternity, they kissed the perfect kiss.
So perfect and pure a kiss has not been had in all of eternity. So perfect a kiss, a thousand lifetimes were lived. So perfect a kiss that time stopped and they existed together, everywhere. So perfect a kiss it was and ever shall be.
The sun was just making it's way to the horizon. The first filaments already shining down on them causing their tears to shimmer in the morning. His body no longer able to maintain his posture he slumped into her arms.
“You are right. We are almost there. We are together now.” She said pulling his weakening body tightly to hers. She watched as the fire as bright as the sun came over the land. “Finally and eternally we are together.”
